Every year Dr. John Smith (at his own expense), is part of a surgical team that travels on missions around the world. In September of 2005, the 17-member team traveled to Shimla, India for 11 days. Dr. John Smith’s team performed 92 operations, consisting of 60 lip/cleft palates and 32 burn reconstructions.

When Dr. Smith is asked: Why is it so important to donate his surgical skills for reconstructive surgery to children with facial deformities (cleft lip & palate) and burn scar contractures?

His Answer Is Simple:
I always believe you don’t get many chances in life to do something meaningful, to be a surgeon who is behind an evolving physical and emotional change is an extraordinary opportunity. Can I make a difference? I know I can!
As a surgeon, I always remember that a parent chooses to trust me and my skills, and by that choice entrust their child’s face and life in my hands. I see the struggle; the pain, the joy and the triumph of seeing a child’s smile.
